Mule-Drawn Canal Boat: Toledo, OH

Possibly one of our most unique field trip experiences was taking a ride on a mule-drawn boat. We weren’t completely sure what to expect but it was an overall pleasant day.

The boat ride on the canal itself was the start of the adventure.  While on the boat, the staff became a living history exhibit and talked to us as though we’d traveled back in time. They were very entertaining as the boat, being pulled by two mules, slowly made its way down the canal.

The section of canal used for this experience has a working lock system , one of the last of its type from the 1800s. The boat fit very tightly into the lock and we were closed in. It was a bit of strange feeling to watch the boat rise up in the water to the upper level section of the canal.

Here you can see how low we are in the lock!
And here you can see how much higher we have reached!

After raising up to the higher level, we were able to get off the boat and the kids had the chance to open and close the doors to the lock.

Working the door to the lock (Click to watch the video!).

Finally, we returned to the boat and experienced the opposite–we went into the lock and went DOWN to the lower level of the canal. Although we’ve been to a canal/lock system museum before, I had never actually experienced traveling through one myself, so I found it fascinating.

We then took the boat back to our starting point, and were invited to explore the gristmill on the property.

After the trip, we checked out a local ice cream stand that was absolutely amazing.  It was located right on the river and had all kinds of odd and crazy flavors. I am so upset with myself for not taking a picture of the menu! I know one of them was “The Muddy Maumee” (the river running behind the ice cream stand is the Maumee River).

To take a ride on the canal, check out the Metro Parks Toledo website. We booked our experience well in advance but we went with a large group. I believe that you can purchase tickets the day you arrive, but I would call ahead to make sure they aren’t fully booked. Also, the boat does not travel in the winter. You can take a ride from May through October. See their website for the complete, detailed schedule.

If you find yourself in Toledo, give this canal ride your time. It is a great way to experience life in another time and also learn about locks and canals, as well as gristmills.
